An Honest President by H. Paul Jeffers

Just finished reading An Honest President. It is a biography of Grover Cleveland. Grover was an interesting president.

– He was the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms
– He was single when he became president so his sister served as “first” lady until he married
– He was the first president to have a child born in the White House

However, what was really interesting is that he was just a lawyer who walked into a bar on the day that the Buffalo Democrat party was meeting to discuss who they could get to run for mayor of Buffalo, NY. The Republican who was running was so corrupt, that the Republicans crossed over and voted for the Honest Cleveland. He only served as mayor for 2 years before the State Democratic party decided to run him for governor of New York where he managed to win. 2 years later the national Democrat party then asked him to run where he broke up a 24-year trend of Republicans winning the White House.

Grover Cleveland was always known for being a Veto Mayor/Gov./Pres. He was a huge believer in saying no to special interest and that there needed to be a good reason before a law was passed.

Long before Cleveland was mayor, before he was married, he fathered a child out of wedlock. When the issue arose in the presidential election, he told his political staff to not try to hide or dodge the issue. Instead, they were to admit the fact and move on.

Personally, I am looking forward to the day when we can elect an honest president once again. An individual who put the people first. An individual who does not see the Government as an opportunity dish out political favors to the rich or to the poor, but instead sees that it is the Governments responsibility to be limited. An individual who admits when they made a mistake and does not try to spin the truth in accordance with the focus groups.

Personally, if Grover Cleveland were running for President today, I would take him in a heartbeat over the current slate of candidates even though he is a Democrat.
